Beijingreference

The reference: the full set of retroflexes — zh, ch, sh, r as ʈ͡ʂ ʈ͡ʂʰ ʂ ʐ — a clear n/ng contrast at the end of a syllable, and the erhua that Beijing adds to the ends of words. Beijingers also reduce more syllables to the neutral tone than anyone else.

Where: Beijing and the northern standard

The way in: Curl the tongue for every zh, ch, sh and r, and add an r to the end of 'a little'.

Anything the spelling engine can transcribe, the accent can move. Slow it down to hear the shape.

Which rules fired

Nothing moved — this word has none of the sounds this accent changes.

Melody and rhythm

Four tones, and the neutral tone used generously: the second syllable of many two-syllable words loses its tone entirely. The r-suffix — 玩儿 wánr, 一点儿 yìdiǎnr — is the Beijing signature.

What moves, one rule at a time

In the order the mouth applies them. Every before-and-after is playable — click the IPA. The pattern is the rule as the engine runs it, for the curious.

This is the reference: the site's own transcription, with nothing moved. Its character is in the melody above.
