Plurals

Depends on the gender and the ending.

Masculine

  • Ending -ा: change to -े — कमरा → कमरे (room → rooms)
  • Ending in anything else: no change — आदमी → आदमी, घर → घर

एक घर one house, दस घर ten houses. The number does the work.

Feminine

  • Ending -ी: add -याँ — लड़की → लड़कियाँ
  • Ending in anything else: add -ें — किताब → किताबें, रोटी → रोटियाँ

The oblique plural

Before a postposition, every plural becomes -ओं (masculine) or -यों / -ओं (feminine).

घर house → घरों में in the houses किताबें books → किताबों का of the books

This form appears constantly, because postpositions appear constantly.

Plurals used for respect

आप aap "you" is grammatically plural even for one person, and takes plural verbs: आप हैं, never आप है. The same happens with people you respect in the third person — a father may be referred to as वे "they" and given plural verbs by his own children.

No plural after a number

पाँच किताब is understood, though पाँच किताबें is better. What Hindi will not do is mark the plural twice.
