cvous direzk or /ʈ/

le geste : velar → palatal

Vietnamese: hello / goodbye · écrit "ch", "tr (Hanoi)"

A stop made with the tongue body on the palate; there is no 'sh' after it. Close to Korean ㅈ but tighter and with no hiss. tr merges into it in Hanoi (the south says a retroflex /ʈ/).

Votre /k/ est celui de kaam (work).

ɲvous direzɳ

le geste : retroflex → palatal

Vietnamese: house · écrit "nh"

Spanish ñ. Also a final: anh, bánh.

Votre /ɳ/ est celui de gaṇesh (Ganesh).

ivous direzɪ or /iː/

le geste : near-close → close

Vietnamese: to go · écrit "i", "y"

i and y are the same vowel; the spelling choice is convention (Mỹ, kỹ).

Votre /ɪ/ est celui de din (day).

uvous direzʊ or /uː/

le geste : near-close → close

Vietnamese: autumn; to collect · écrit "u"

Votre /ʊ/ est celui de kuchh (something).

ɓvous direzb

le geste : close, but not identical

Vietnamese: three; father · écrit "b"

Implosive: the larynx drops and air is drawn in as the lips open. A plain English b is understood, but sounds foreign. New for Korean speakers too — Korean ㅂ is neither voiced nor implosive.

Votre /b/ est celui de bacchaa (child).

ɗvous direzd

le geste : close, but not identical

Vietnamese: to go · écrit "đ"

The barred đ is the ONLY d-sound in Vietnamese; the unbarred d is /z/ (or /j/ in the south).

Votre /d/ est celui de din (day).

evous direzeː or /ɪ/

le geste : close, but not identical

Vietnamese: night · écrit "ê"

Closed e — French é, Korean ㅔ, the vowel of American 'say' without the glide. The hat makes it closed.

Votre /eː/ est celui de ek (one).

ɛvous direzɛː

le geste : close, but not identical

Vietnamese: mother · écrit "e"

Open e — French è, the e of American 'bed'. Korean ㅐ as it was before Seoul merged it into ㅔ: Vietnamese still keeps the two apart, so mẹ 'mother' and mê 'to be entranced' are different words.

Votre /ɛː/ est celui de hai (is).

avous direzaː

le geste : close, but not identical

Vietnamese: three; father · écrit "a"

Long and open. Before -nh and -ch it is said shorter and fronter (anh, sách).

Votre /aː/ est celui de aam (mango).

ăvous direzaː

le geste : close, but not identical

Vietnamese: to eat · écrit "ă", "a (in ay, au)"

A SHORT a. Written ă on its own, but the a of tay and sáu is this vowel too — which is why tai/tay and sao/sáu are different words.

Votre /aː/ est celui de aam (mango).

ovous direzoː or /ʊ/

le geste : close, but not identical

Vietnamese: aunt; Miss; female teacher · écrit "ô"

Closed o — French eau, Korean ㅗ, the vowel of American 'go' without the glide. The hat makes it closed.

Votre /oː/ est celui de do (two).

ɔvous direzɔː

le geste : close, but not identical

Vietnamese: to give; for · écrit "o"

Open o — the vowel of 'law' for an American who keeps caught apart from cot, shorter. Korean has nothing between ㅗ and ㅓ; this sits between them.

Votre /ɔː/ est celui de aur (and).

ŋvous direzɳ

le geste : retroflex → velar

Vietnamese: delicious · écrit "ng", "ngh"

English and Korean have this sound only at the end of a syllable (sing, 강); Vietnamese puts it at the start. Say 'sing on', then drop the 'si'. ngh is the same sound before e/ê/i.

Votre /ɳ/ est celui de gaṇesh (Ganesh).

fvous direzs

le geste : alveolar → labiodental

Vietnamese: phở (noodle soup) · écrit "ph"

The missionaries' spelling of /f/. There is no letter f in native words.

Votre /s/ est celui de saal (year).

zvous direzs

le geste : voiced

Vietnamese: yes (polite) · écrit "d", "gi", "r (Hanoi)"

Three spellings, one Hanoi sound. The south says d and gi as /j/ and r as /ʐ/ or a trill, and keeps all three apart in writing.

Votre /s/ est celui de saal (year).

wvous direzʋ or /j/

le geste : close, but not identical

Vietnamese: star; why · écrit "o-, u- (before a vowel)", "qu-", "-o, -u (after a vowel)"

Both an on-glide (hoa, quê) and an off-glide (sao, đâu).

Votre /ʋ/ est celui de vah (he, she, that).

ɯvous direzʊ or /uː/

le geste : near-close → close, unrounded

Vietnamese: letter · écrit "ư"

Say /u/, then unround the lips and keep the tongue where it was. The horn on the letter means 'unrounded'. This is Korean ㅡ (eu), exactly — a Korean speaker owns it already.

Votre /ʊ/ est celui de kuchh (something).

vvous direzʋ

le geste : approximant → fricative

Vietnamese: happy, fun · écrit "v"

Hanoi /v/; the south says /j/, so vui sounds like 'yui'.

Votre /ʋ/ est celui de vah (he, she, that).

xvous direzk

le geste : plosive → fricative

Vietnamese: no; not; zero · écrit "kh"

German ach, Spanish j — or Korean ㅎ in front of ㅡ (흐), which comes close. không is the word you will say most.

Votre /k/ est celui de kaam (work).

ɣvous direzɡ

le geste : plosive → fricative

Vietnamese: chicken · écrit "g", "gh"

A voiced fricative, like Spanish g between vowels — softer than English g. gh before e/ê/i.

Votre /ɡ/ est celui de garam (hot).

ɤvous direzoː or /ə/, /ʊ/

le geste : unrounded

Vietnamese: cooked rice; a meal · écrit "ơ"

Say /o/ and unround the lips — the same horn, same instruction. Close to Korean ㅓ (eo), and to American 'bird' with the r taken out.

Votre /oː/ est celui de do (two).

ɤ̆vous direzoː or /ə/, /ʊ/

le geste : unrounded

Vietnamese: to weigh; a kilo · écrit "â"

A SHORT ơ: cân is clipped, cơn is held. The vowel of American 'cut', or a short Korean ㅓ.

Votre /oː/ est celui de do (two).

hvous direzɦ or /s/, /ʃ/

iəcentring diphthong from i

money

One diphthong, spelled ia when nothing follows (kia) and iê when a consonant does (tiền).

Le plus proche que vous ayez : ɪ — mais it glides, yours would hold still, near-close → close.

uəcentring diphthong from u

to buy

ua when final (mua), uô before a consonant (muốn). After q the u belongs to the consonant: qua is /kwa/.

Le plus proche que vous ayez : ʊ — mais it glides, yours would hold still, near-close → close.

ɯəcentring diphthong from ɯ

rain

ưa when final (mưa), ươ before a consonant (nước, người).

Le plus proche que vous ayez : ʊ — mais it glides, yours would hold still, near-close → close, unrounded.

Rythme et hauteur

La couche que l'orthographe ne note jamais, et celle qui fait qu'une phrase correcte sonne encore étrangère.

HindiVietnamien
RhythmSyllable-timed, with deletionSyllable-timed, one tone per syllable
StressNot contrastive and not written. Stress falls on the heaviest syllable — a long vowel or a closed syllable outweighs a short open one — and where several are equal it goes to the last of them. No two Hindi words are told apart by stress alone, which makes it the least stressful stress system here.No lexical stress. Every syllable carries its own tone and its own full vowel, and none is reduced. What sounds like stress to an English ear is a syllable holding its tone longer or louder for emphasis, and grammatical words (đã, sẽ, được) being said lighter and faster than content words.
PitchNo lexical tone, unlike its neighbour Punjabi, which developed one. Pitch does intonation, and क्या at the front of a sentence marks a question so the rise is optional.lexical tone — pitch changes the word

L'avertissement honnête

Ceci est une prédiction tirée de la forme de deux systèmes de sons, pas un enregistrement de vous. Elle dit ce que votre inventaire rend probable — elle ne peut pas savoir que le hindi que vous parlez a une variété régionale possédant déjà l'un de ces sons, ni que vous avez appris le vietnamien auprès de quelqu'un dont vous avez copié l'accent. Un professeur qui vous écoute fera mieux. Servez-vous-en pour savoir quoi écouter.
