Prepositions

Most Vietnamese prepositions are verbs or nouns doing a second job, and knowing the first job makes the second one predictable. Ở is "to live / be at" and so "at"; trên is "the top" and so "on"; vào is "to enter" and so "into".

Place

wordmeaningexample
ởat, in — the general locativeở nhà at home · ở Việt Nam in Vietnam · nhà ga ở đâu?
trongin, inside; duringtrong nhà in the house · trong hai giờ for two hours

Ở is usually said before the others when the sense is "be located": ở trên bàn, ở trong nhà. Alone it is "at": ở đây here, ở đó there.

Direction: the verbs of motion

The direction words are verbs, and after another verb they behave as prepositions:

wordas a verbas a preposition
đến / tớito arriveto: đi đến Huế
vềto go backback to, towards, about: về nhà home · nói về talk about
vàoto enterin, into: đi vào nhà · vào tháng năm in May
rato go outout: đi ra ngoài · ra Hà Nội
lênto go upup, onto: đi lên núi
xuốngto go downdown, off: xuống xe get off the bus
qua / sangto crossacross, over to: đi sang Lào
từ—from: từ Hà Nội đến Huế from Hanoi to Huế; từ năm 2010 since 2010

A national detail: from Hanoi you go vào (into) the south and from Saigon you go ra (out to) the north, whichever direction you personally face — the map is written into the verbs.

No preposition where English has one

Several English prepositions simply vanish:

Tôi đi Hà Nội. — "I'm going to Hanoi." (đi + place) Tôi nghe nhạc. — "I listen to music." Anh ấy đợi tôi. — "He's waiting for me." Tôi tìm chìa khoá. — "I'm looking for the keys."

And where English has "in" for a country as a location, Vietnamese has ở; for a country as a destination, nothing.

If you speak Korean

Every Korean postposition is a Vietnamese preposition: 에 / 에서 is ở, 부터 … 까지 is từ … đến, 와/과 is với, 로 is bằng, 을/를 위해 is để / cho, 에 대해 is về. Same jobs, the other side of the noun. And the direction verbs — vào 들어가다, ra 나가다, lên 올라가다, xuống 내려가다 — sit after the main verb where Korean puts them in a -아/어 chain.
