Le temps : in / on / at

portéeexemples
inlongues périodesin May, in 2024, in summer, in the morning, in the 19th century
onjours et dateson Monday, on 4 July, on Christmas Day, on Friday morning
atheures et points précisat six o'clock, at noon, at night, at the weekend (US : on the weekend), at Christmas (la période)
  • Pas de préposition devant last, next, this, every : see you Ø next week (✗ on next week).
I'll be there in ten minutes.
  • for + durée, since + point de départ, ago après la quantité : for two years, since 2020, two years ago (il y a deux ans inverse l'ordre).
Finish it by five.

Le lieu : in / on / at

portéeexemples
inà l'intérieur d'un volume ou d'une zonein the box, in the kitchen, in London, in France, in the car
onen contact avec une surface ou une ligneon the table, on the wall, on the third floor, on the bus/train/plane
atun point, un lieu vu comme une étapeat the door, at the bus stop, at work, at school, at home, at the airport
  • Le mouvement se dit to : go to London, come to my house — mais go Ø home (✗ to home).

listen to music✗ listen musicescuchar música
wait for the bus✗ wait the busattendre le bus
depend on you✗ depend of/fromdépendre de, dipendere da
married to him✗ married withmarié avec, casado con
dream of/about you✗ dream withsoñar con
ask Ø somebody✗ ask to somebodydemander à
discuss / enter / phone / answer Ø it✗ discuss about, enter in, answer todiscuter de, entrer dans, répondre à
good at maths✗ good inbueno en, gut in
interested in art✗ interested for/byintéressé par
afraid of dogs✗ afraid from
it consists of …✗ consists in

Apprenez le verbe et sa préposition comme un seul mot : look at (poser les yeux), look for (chercher) et look after (s'occuper de) sont trois verbes différents.

Petits points, mais constants

  • La préposition orpheline est normale : elle finit volontiers la phrase — Who are you waiting for? the house I grew up in. Ne vous contorsionnez pas en for whom.
  • by = l'agent ou le moyen : a book by Orwell, pay by card, by train — mais on ne dit pas walk by foot : c'est on foot.
  • with = l'instrument : cut it with a knife.
  • Après une préposition, le verbe se met en -ing : good at swimming, before leaving, without asking (✗ without to ask, calque de sans demander).
