Questions

Italian questions are the easiest in Western Europe: no inversion, no helper verb, no French est-ce que. Say the statement with rising intonation, or start with a question word. Done.

In writing, only the question mark distinguishes them. You may move the subject to the end for flavour — Viene Marco? — but nothing is required.

Compare: English needs do ("Do you speak…?"), French offers three constructions. Italian and Spanish just change the tune — and Italian doesn't even use Spanish's ¿.

Question words

perché means both why and because: Perché studi l'italiano? — Perché mi piace. One word, both directions.
quanto and quale agree with their noun: quanti anni, quante volte.
come and dove elide before è: com'è, dov'è.

After a question word, verb before subject

The one ordering rule: subject goes after the verb, never between question word and verb.

Dove abita Maria? — not ~~Dove Maria abita?~~ Quando arriva il treno? — not ~~Quando il treno arriva?~~

Prepositions come first — no stranding

English strands prepositions ("Who are you talking to?"); Italian fronts them:

Con chi parli? · Di che cosa parlate? · A chi l'hai dato? · Da dove vieni?

Small idiomatic asymmetries

Qual è…? (What is…?) for definitions and choices: Qual è il tuo numero? — not Che cosa è. No apostrophe on qual è.
"How old are you?" = Quanti anni hai? (how many years do you have — as in Spanish/French).
Tag questions: no?, vero?, giusto? — Fa freddo, no?
