Australian

Non-rhotic like RP, but the diphthongs have all shifted one step round the mouth: FACE starts from TRAP, PRICE starts from PALM, GOAT starts from STRUT. Listeners who hear 'day' as 'die' and 'die' as 'doy' are hearing exactly that chain shift.

Où: Australia — general variety

La porte d’entrée: Say 'g'day mate' as ɡʌʊ-dæɪ mæɪt, and end it on a rise.

Les règles déclenchées

  1. t between vowels taps, as in America

Mélodie et rythme

The high rising terminal: statements end on a rise, as if checking the listener is still there. Rhythm is relaxed, with long stressed syllables.

Ce qui bouge, règle par règle

Dans l’ordre où la bouche les applique. Chaque avant/après est écoutable — cliquez sur l’API. Le motif est la règle telle que le moteur l’exécute, pour les curieux.

Consonnes

R disappears after a vowel

([iɪyʏeɛøœəɐæaɑɒɔoʊuʌɤɵɚɨɯ][ː̃]?)ɹ(?![iɪyʏeɛøœəɐæaɑɒɔoʊuʌɤɵɚɨɯ]| [iɪyʏeɛøœəɐæaɑɒɔoʊuʌɤɵɚɨɯ]) → $1

Quand: after a vowel, when no vowel follows

Comment: Do not curl the tongue. Let the vowel end.

Non-rhotic, exactly as London — Australia inherited it from the ships.

Australia flaps like America and drops r like England — it took one habit from each.

DRESS is raised

Comment: Say 'bed' with the tongue a notch closer to 'bid'.

The whole front-vowel series sits higher than in England.

FACE starts from TRAP

eɪ → æɪ

Comment: Begin the vowel from 'cat', not from 'bet'.

The start of the diphthong has dropped and fronted, which is why an outsider hears 'day' as 'die'.

PRICE starts from PALM

aɪ → ɑɪ

Comment: Begin from the doctor's 'ah'.

And this one has moved back to make room, so 'die' sounds like 'doy'.

GOAT starts from STRUT

Comment: Begin from the vowel of 'cut' and glide up.

FLEECE has an on-glide

iː → ɪi

The long ee starts slightly lower and slides up — a small thing that carries a lot of the accent.
