Received Pronunciationréférence

The accent the site's English transcription is closest to — RP vowels, with one thing removed. The reference keeps every r; RP drops the ones that are not followed by a vowel, and that single rule is most of what separates it from General American.

Où: southern England; the BBC of the 20th century

La porte d’entrée: Say 'the car is far' and let both r's vanish; then 'far away' and let one come back.

Les règles déclenchées

Rien n’a bougé — ce mot ne contient aucun des sons que cet accent modifie.

Mélodie et rythme

Wide pitch range, with the nucleus of a sentence falling hard. Unstressed syllables are crushed to schwa or nothing — 'necessary' has two audible syllables, not four.

Ce qui bouge, règle par règle

Dans l’ordre où la bouche les applique. Chaque avant/après est écoutable — cliquez sur l’API. Le motif est la règle telle que le moteur l’exécute, pour les curieux.

Consonnes

…but comes back when a vowel follows

([iɪyʏeɛøœəɐæaɑɒɔoʊuʌɤɵɚɨɯ][ː̃]?)(ɹ) (?=[iɪyʏeɛøœəɐæaɑɒɔoʊuʌɤɵɚɨɯ]) → $1$2

Quand: at the end of a word, when the next word starts with a vowel

Comment: Let the tongue tip lift only as you move into the next word.

Linking r. The r was never lost from the underlying word — it only surfaces when it has a vowel to attach to. Many speakers add one that was never there: 'law and order' comes out lawr-and-order.

Quand: after a vowel, when no vowel follows

Comment: Do not curl the tongue at all. Let the vowel simply end, slightly longer than you think it should.

Southern England stopped saying post-vocalic r in the 1700s. The spelling never caught up, and neither did America, Scotland or Ireland.
