Present tense

Three families by infinitive ending: -ar, -er, -ir. The endings are so distinctive that Spanish usually drops the subject pronoun — hablo already says "I".

Regular verbs

hablar (speak)comer (eat)vivir (live)
yohablocomovivo
túhablascomesvives
él / ella / ustedhablacomevive
nosotroshablamoscomemosvivimos
vosotros (Spain)habláiscoméisvivís
ellos / ustedeshablancomenviven
  • -er and -ir differ only in nosotros / vosotros.
  • Latin America uses ustedes for all plural "you" — the vosotros row disappears.

Stem-changing verbs (the "boot")

The stressed vowel changes in all forms except nosotros / vosotros — draw a line around them and it looks like a boot.

e → ie: querero → ue: podere → i: pedir
quieropuedopido
quierespuedespides
quierepuedepide
queremospodemospedimos
queréispodéispedís
quierenpuedenpiden

Same pattern: pensar, empezar, entender, preferir (e→ie) · dormir, volver, contar, encontrar (o→ue) · servir, repetir, seguir (e→i). Jugar is the lone u→ue: juego.

Irregular first person only

hacer → hagoponer → pongo
salir → salgotraer → traigo
saber → séconocer → conozco
dar → doyver → veo

The rest of the paradigm is regular: hago, haces, hace…

The big four

ser (be, essence)estar (be, state/place)tener (have)ir (go)
yosoyestoytengovoy
túeresestástienesvas
élesestátieneva
nosotrossomosestamostenemosvamos
vosotrossoisestáistenéisvais
ellossonestántienenvan

ser vs estar in one line: ser = what something is (identity, origin, profession, time); estar = how/where it is right now (location, mood, state). Es aburrido = he's boring; está aburrido = he's bored.

Continuous: estar + -ando / -iendo

Estoy comiendo. · Están hablando.

Use it only for actions literally in progress; the simple present covers everything else. Ir a + infinitive = going to: Voy a salir.
