Present tense
Two pieces: a participle that agrees with the subject in gender and number, plus the verb होना honaa "to be".
मैं जाता हूँ — I go. Literally "I going am".
| going (m) | going (f) | |
|---|---|---|
| मैं | जाता हूँ | जाती हूँ |
| तुम | जाते हो | जाती हो |
| आप / वे | जाते हैं | जाती हैं |
| हम | जाते हैं | जाती हैं |
A man and a woman say this sentence differently. There is no neutral form.
होना on its own
| मैं हूँ | I am |
| तू है | you are |
| तुम हो | you are |
| आप / वे हैं | you / they are |
| हम हैं | we are |
The continuous
Add रहा / रही / रहे between the stem and the auxiliary:
मैं जा रहा हूँ — I am going (right now).
Hindi keeps the habitual and the continuous properly apart, as English does and French does not.
The verb goes last
मैं रोज़ बाज़ार जाता हूँ — "I daily market go am". Subject, then everything else, then the verb. Hindi is SOV throughout, like Japanese and unlike every European language on this site.
करना — the verb that makes verbs
करना karnaa "to do" turns any noun or adjective, native or borrowed, into a verb:
- साफ़ करना — to clean ("make clean")
- इंतज़ार करना — to wait
- डाउनलोड करना — to download
This is how modern Hindi absorbs English wholesale, and it is unlimited.
