ser, estar and ficar

Three verbs where English has one be.

  • ser for what something is: Sou português. A casa é grande.
  • estar for how it is right now: Estou cansado. A sopa está fria.
  • ficar for where something is permanently, and for becoming: Lisboa fica no sul. Fiquei triste.

É bonita means she is beautiful. Está bonita means she looks beautiful today. Both are compliments and they are not the same one.

The progressive splits the Atlantic

  • Portugal: estou a falar — "I am to speak".
  • Brazil: estou falando — the gerund, as in Spanish.

Both mean "I am speaking", and each sounds foreign in the other country.
